Why Thailand Celebrates 12/12 as National Thai MassageDay

Cortisol

Every year on 12 December, Thailand marks NationalThai Massage Day to honour one of its
most treasured cultural heritages: Nuad Thai (Thai massage). The date commemorates 12
December 2019, when UNESCO officially recognised Nuad Thai as an Intangible Cultural
Heritage of Humanity.

Nuad Thai is more than a wellness practice—it is a 600-year-old tradition rooted in healing
wisdom, community care, and respect for teachers. It has grown into a valuable profession that
supports Thai livelihoods, attracts global visitors, and strengthens Thailand’s cultural and
creative economy.

Now in its 6th year, National Nuad Thai Day is celebrated with activities such as
teacher-honouring ceremonies, large-group massage demonstrations, traditional regional
techniques, exhibitions, and knowledge-sharing sessions. These events highlight the skill, pride,
and cultural significance carried by Thai massage practitioners nationwide.

At Boon Sappaya, we continue this legacy here in central London, offering authentic traditional Thai massage and preserving the heritage of Nuad Thai through skilled practice, mindful care,
and a deep respect for its origins – creating an oasis of serenity for everyone who walks through
our doors.

12/12 stands as a proud reminder of Thailand’s living heritage—and the timeless art of Nuad
Thai.
